Energy Star TV Draft Spec Sets Recyclability, Toxicity Rules


TVs seeking to qualify for the Energy Star label will have to restrict the use of toxic materials and be designed for "ease of disassembly and recyclability," under requirements proposed in the second draft of version 6.0 of the TV specification.  The EPA adopted the toxicity limits from RoHS Directive because TV makers have "extensive experience with designing products free from certain toxic materials" to comply with RoHS, the agency said.

 

The recyclability criteria were drawn from the IEEE 1680.1 standard because "many manufacturers have years of experience with design for recyclability for displays, which use identical materials to those found in TVs," the EPA said.  More then 700 Energy Star display products meet design for recyclability criteria set by IEEE 1680.1, it said.  The agency ...
