New Rovi IPG Patent Infringement Suits Target LG, Mitsubishi, Vizio

Rovi filed another round of lawsuits alleging infringement of its interactive program guide (IPG) patents, this time targeting LG Electronics, Mitsubishi and Vizio. The suits, filed in U.S. District Court, Wilmington, Del., allege the CE companies violated patents covering IPGs with parental control. Rovi filed a separate complaint last November (CED Nov 23 p1) with the U.S. International Trade Commission against Vizio and Haier on similar grounds.
Rovi followed a similar path last year in filing complaints at the ITC (CED Aug 11 p1) against Sharp and Toshiba that eventually yielded settlements and licensing agreements. The pact with Sharp could net Rovi up to $28 million a year in incremental revenue, analysts have said (CED Nov 2 p2). Rovi also is suing Hulu and Netflix.
