Seagate Sees Hard Drive Demand Outstripping Supply Into 2013


Hard drive demand will outstrip supply into 2013, leaving the industry short 150 million units at year-end, Seagate Technology CEO Stephen Luczo said on a conference call.

 

Seagate, which along with Western Digital and component suppliers are still recovering from floods that in October tore through the hard drive production base in Thailand, is about a year from meeting "unmet demand," Luczo said.  The flooding caused "some type of interruption" with more than 20 of Seagate’s product platforms and also cut into the precision machining capability that supports the hard drive industry, said William Mosley, Seagate executive vice president-operations.  Hard drive motors and actuators were "catastrophically" lost, resulting in and more than 200 motor base assemblies having to be requalified, Mosley said.  "It basically means we believe ...
