Vizio Readies Lower-Priced LED Bulbs, Scraps Smartphones

LAS VEGAS -- Vizio has scrapped plans for an Android-based smartphone and postponed delivery of LED light bulbs to mid-year after finding a way to lower prices, Vice President Ken Lowe told us. Vizio’s Via smartphone, featuring a four-inch touchscreen, had been expected last year along with tablets as part of an overall strategy tied to its CE products.
But the smartphone, which also would have required that Vizio strike a cellular carrier deal, proved more complex in terms of market entry than originally thought, Product Engineer James Kittle told us.
